Sports Marketing Internships

The Hampton University Department of Athletics Marketing Office is seeking self-motivated individuals to assist in the marketing of its men’s and women’s athletic programs.  The internship program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students at Hampton University.  All positions are unpaid.  We are a resource for students who are earning credit hours toward their respective degrees, who are building their resumes with professional experiences, and who are interested in developing contacts in the sports marketing arena.

The athletics department recognizes that the sports marketing interns play a key role in the success of the HU game day experience for our fans.  Therefore it is critical that prospective candidates carefully consider the time commitment necessary to successfully participate in this program.

Each position is a year-long position, and applicants are eligible for renewal at the end of each academic year.  The weekly commitment includes office hours as needed and staffing at numerous sporting events, most of which take place on weekends and/or in the evenings.  Interns may use this position to satisfy course credit, practicum, and internship or work study hours.

"As a Sports Marketing Intern, you will be focusing on four main objectives."

1) Promoting Hampton University Athletic Events
Use your creativity to increase the attendance at games. You will do this by creating flyers, making posters, and putting together group nights or special events. For example, inviting a little league division out to a football or softball game or organizing a Mascot night for one of our basketball games. You will have the ability to put together a project that you think will bring the fans out to the games. Through this internship you will gain valuable experience on how to plan a major event such as Midnight Madness and Pirate Fest, and see it through to its completion.

2) Game Management

You will be at HU football, basketball, volleyball, and softball games. While at these events, you will help create a fun atmosphere for the fans. That means you will gain experience writing game day scripts,  promotions, help coordinate with the band and cheerleaders, run the marketing table, and fulfill other duties that come up during the games.

3) Corporate Sales
You will get exposure to the sales side of the business and learn how to: make cold calls, identify a potential sponsor, effectively communicate to a prospective client, and write proposals.

4) Season Ticket Sales

You will be part of a Sales Force Team charged with identifying target markets, developing call sheets, and creating and executing a sales strategy.

SMI Benefits Include:

  • HU Athletics S.M.I sideline apparel to be worn while working events
  • Game day credentials to be worn at all times on game days
  • Opportunity to earn class or internship credits
  • Networking opportunities and interaction with athletic department individuals
  • Behind the scenes access to PIRATE sporting events
