HAMPTON, Va. – A jumper from
Trevond Barnes with 27 seconds left gave the Hampton University men's basketball team a 66-65 win over Maryland Eastern Shore Wednesday night at the HU Convocation Center, giving the Pirates back-to-back wins to close out the homestand.
The Pirates improved to 8-13 overall and 5-3 in MEAC play.
Jermaine Marrow logged his second straight 20-point effort, leading three Pirates in double figures with 20 points on 7-for-19 shooting and a 3-for-6 night from distance. He also led the Pirates with five assists.
Kalin Fisher added 13 points, while Barnes chipped in 10.
Lawrence Cooks added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Hampton shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the floor and made eight of its 21 3-pointers (38.1 percent). The Pirates also held a 43-30 edge on the glass, while also edging MDES in second-chance points (10-4) and bench points (18-5).
Ryan Andino gave the Hawks a 63-60 lead with a trey with 2:15 remaining, before Fisher and Marrow each sank layups to put the Pirates on top 64-63 with 1:24 left to play. Yet MDES took the lead right back with 53 seconds left after Logan McIntosh's jumper made the score 65-64.
Barnes then hit his shot, putting the Pirates up by one, and McIntosh had two looks in the last five seconds to give MDES the win, but both shots missed.
The Hawks had tied the game at 10-10 after a pair of early free throws from Bakari Copeland, but the Pirates responded with seven straight to take a 17-10 lead after Marrow converted a 3-point play at the 12:48 mark.
A Cooks trey at the 8:54 mark put Hampton up 22-14, but the Hawks answered with an 11-0 run to take a 25-22 lead with 5:43 left in the half. Andino's free throws at the 4:06 mark gave MDES a 30-23 lead, and the Hawks went into the half with a 33-28 lead.
Marrow had nine points at the break.
Copeland gave the Hawks a 47-39 lead with a jumper with 11:59 left in the second half, but the Pirates responded by going on an 11-4 run to cut the lead to 51-50 at the 7:24 mark after a Cooks three. MDES stretched the lead back out to 55-50, and the two teams traded the lead multiple times down the stretch.
In all, there were five lead changes and three ties in the second half.
The Hawks (7-16, 4-4 MEAC) shot 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the floor – including a 54.2 percent clip in the second half. MDES was 3-for-10 from behind the arc and 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) from the free throw line.
Copeland led the Hawks with 17 points.
