HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University indoor track teams returned to action this weekend competing in meets at Virginia Tech and Liberty.
The multi-event athletes and throwers competed in Lynchburg at the Liberty Invitational and came away with several top performances.
Liberty Invitational
In the women's shot put, Corneisha Mitchell took sixth with a throw of 38-3.25, while
Kiyanna Thomas came in ninth one inch behind Mitchell at 38-2.25.
Hampton had four participants in the pentathlon as
Kaitlin Scott won the 60 hurdles in 8.97,
Sydney Davis took fourth (9.23),
Crystal Eley was fifth (9.30) and
Kayla Key was 11
th (9.57). The ladies took three of the top nine spots in the long jump as Key was second (17-2.75), Davis took seventh (16-5.75) and Scott was ninth (16-5). In the final standings two Lady Pirates finished in the top five as Scott was second with 3,363 points, followed by Key in fifth with 3,034.
The men had three participate in the heptathlon with two of them coming in the top six.
Donmanique Hardy was fifth with 4,313 points and
Jerrick Powell was sixth with 4,232 points. In the 60-meter dash, Hampton took three of the top four spots as
Trey Clark won the event in 7.10, followed by Powell in second (7.23) and Hardy in fourth (7.29).
For the men in the high jump, Jonathan Swain took 11
th (6-2.25), while
Michael Crockett was 12
th in the shot put with a throw of 43-5.75.
Hokie Invitational
For the women,
Meshala Morton had a strong weekend taking third in the 60 meter dash (7.51) and sixth in the 200 meters (24.60).
Pollyanna Velasco had a pair of top 15 finishes in the distance events finishing 15
th in the mile (5:14.35) and eighth in the 3000 meters (10:58.19).
Mallory Pitchford took tenth in the 60 hurdles (8.75), while the 4x400 meter relay team was fifth in a time of 3:50.62 consisting of
Saenea Williams, Morton,
Alysha Evans and
Sashana Hinds. In the triple jump,
Jayme Thomas was 11
th (11.66m).
The men were highlighted by a pair of second place finishes by the relay teams. In the 4x400 relay, the team of
Justin Beatty,
Jaelen Williams,
Gabriel Johnson and
Rayon Black took second in 3:13.55 finishing two seconds behind a team from the University of Florida. In the distance medley, the team of
Geoffrey McCullough, Chance Washington-Sanders,
Stanley Davis and
Emmanuel Too also took second to a team from Florida running 10:07.99 to trail the Gators by .12.
Other top performances came from
Charles Graham in the 60 hurdles taking second in 7.98;
Justin Beatty was fifth in the 400 meters (48.42) and
Rayon Black was seventh (48.86);
Jaelen Williams was seventh in the 600 meters (1:21.67) and sixth in the long jump (6.77M), while
Isaac Arriola was fourth in the triple jump (14.99M).
Next up for the track teams will be the Darius Dixon Memorial on January 27
th at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
