NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will be the No. 1 seed in the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament, which will be held at Norfolk Scope Arena next Monday through Saturday.
The brackets were officially unveiled Thursday night.
The Pirates (18-10, 13-3 MEAC) earned the top seed by virtue of winning the regular season title for the first time since the 2001-02 season, and they will play their quarterfinal game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. They will face either No. 8 Maryland Eastern Shore or No. 9 Morgan State; those two teams will meet in the first round on Tuesday.
Hampton will be looking to defend its tournament crown from last season, when the Pirates won their fifth-ever MEAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed.
Norfolk State earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of a tiebreaker over South Carolina State, which will be the No. 3 seed. Both teams earned first-round byes, as did No. 4 seed Bethune-Cookman since the tournament field is 12 teams this year.
The semifinals will be on Friday, starting at 6 p.m., with the championship game on Saturday tipping at 1 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
All games in the 2016 MEAC Tournament will be streamed live on ESPN3.
