Final Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Hampton University women's track & field team won its fifth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
The Lady Pirates finished with 168.5 points, while Norfolk State finished in second with 149.66 points. Norfolk State took the men's team title with 150.5 points. The Pirates finished fifth in the team standings with 73.5 points.
Maurice Pierce was named the Most Outstanding Coach on the women's side, while junior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.), by virtue of scoring 24.5 points, was named the MEAC Most Outstanding Runner.
Senior
Petrice Richards (Manchester, Jamaica) ran an 11.40 to take the 100-meter dash with a new MEAC record. Vassell finished third with an 11.69. She also ran a 23.75 to take the 200-meter dash title, as the Lady Pirates swept the podium in that event; senior
Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) finished second with a 23.84, while junior Vassell ran a 24.17 to take third.
That sweep gave the Lady Pirates the overall team lead for good.
McCorory also ran a 53.39 in the 400-meter dash to defend her MEAC title in that event.
Junior
Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.), fresh off her MEAC title in the 5,000-meter run on Thursday, won the conference title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school- and MEAC-record time of 11:15.28. Her win in that event virtually assured the Lady Pirates of their fifth straight outdoor team title.
The Lady Pirates also took the 4x400-meter relay title with a time of 3:40.83. McCorory, sophomore
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica), Vassell and junior
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) gave Hampton its seventh event title of the meet.
Junior
Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) gave the Pirates their lone individual MEAC title by running a school-record 13.83 in the 110-meter hurdles. Walker finished seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 13.69 meters.
The Pirates' 4x100-meter relay team set a new school and conference record in the 4x100-meter relay, running a 39.71 to take the gold medal. Sophomore
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a strong anchor leg to help the Pirates – along with junior
Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.), Walker and junior
Devon Brown (Laurel, Md.) – race past Maryland-Eastern Shore and take the title.
The Lady Pirates' 4x100-meter relay team took home the silver medal after running a 45.58, finishing just .08 seconds behind South Carolina State. Vassell ran a spirited anchor leg, charging down the straightaway before just being edged out.
Vassell also ran a 13.54 in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second, .01 seconds behind Howard's Landria Buckley.
Senior
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:40.59.
Senior
Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) finished fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 40.16 meters, while junior
Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) threw the discus 37.78 meters to finish seventh.
Anderson also finished second in the 100-meter dash with a 10.42, while Dixon ran a 10.61 to finish sixth. Anderson also came in third in the 200-meter dash after running a 21.48.
Junior
Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) finished second in the pole vault, leaping 4.25 meters, while freshman
Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:59.16. Junior
Lamar Veale (Chesapeake, Va.) finished fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 44.83 meters.
Dixon also finished seventh in the javelin throw with a distance of 43.17 meters.
