2010 Facts and Past Champions
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Hampton University men's and women's golf teams will close the 2009-10 season this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when they compete in the 24th annual PGA Minority Collegiate Championship at the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses.
More than 200 players from 50 colleges and universities will comprise this year's championship field. The championship will be divided into four divisions: NCAA Division I, NCA Division II and NAIA Men's and Women's.
The Individual Invitational will be open to students who are African-American, Hispanic-American, Native or Alaskan American, Asian or Pacific Island American.
The Pirates will be among 14 teams competing in the Division I section, with the Lady Pirates among seven women's teams competing. Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman, South Carolina State and Tennessee State are a few of the other schools competing in the women's division.
The Pirates finished 10th in their division in last year's PGA Minority, shooting a team score of 966. Geoffrey Napper (Bowie, Md.) led the Pirates, finishing tied for 34th with a 22-over 238 and shooting a season-best 78 in the second round. Sidney Fields (Decatur, Ga.), who had a season-best 75 in the third round, shot a 27-over 243 to finish tied for 38th, while Javier Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) finished in a tie for 40th after firing a 29-over 245.
Jason Sherer (Lansing, Mich.) finished 45th with a 34-over 250, and Arturo Saro shot a 35-over 251 to finish tied for 46th.
The Pirates won the PGA Minority in 1996.
The Lady Pirates finished third in their division last year, with Dionne West (Springdale, Md.) firing a 37-over 253 to finish 10th and Iman Ellis (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) shooting a 39-over 255 to come in 11th. Haley Hill (Charlotte, N.C.) finished 12th with a 40-over 256, while Sydnee Mack (Las Vegas, Nev.) fired a 47-over 263 to finish 13th and Jessi Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ga.) came in 14th with a 74-over 290.
Nicole West (Springdale, Md.) is one of 16 players listed to compete in the women's Individual Invitational.
The Lady Pirates have won four tournaments so far this season, all in the last five events. After closing out the fall season by taking the Savannah State Fall Invitational, the Lady Pirates took the Winston-Salem State Spring Challenge and the Alabama A&M Golf Classic, before also winning the Women's Collegiate Championship.
The Lady Pirates also finished in a tie for third in the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational.
