HAMPTON, Va. – Hampton University sophomore Rebecca Magett and sophomore Gellert Varga were named HU Athletes of the Week, thanks to their respective performances on the softball diamond and the tennis court.

Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was named MEAC Player of the Week after a three-game series against Maryland-Eastern Shore on April 2-3 – a series in which she went 7-for-10 (.700) from the plate with four home runs, two doubles and eight RBI. She also scored eight runs and walked once.

All four of Magett's home runs came in the second game of April 2's doubleheader, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Lady Pirates the win.

Varga (Becej, Serbia) helped lead the Pirates to the MEAC Northern Division regular-season title, beating Howard's Devard Wharton 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in single play, before teaming up with Nelio Mattos to beat Wharton and Omar Haloui is doubles play.

He also defeated Morgan State's Dimtiry Chekhlatyy 6-2, 6-4 to finish the season 4-0 in MEAC play and 11-2 overall. Varga and Mattos also beat Kevin Charles and Eric Ward 8-3 in doubles play.
