LADY PIRATES WIN WOMEN’S COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP

MARIETTA, Ga. –
For the second straight year, the Hampton University women's golf team won the Women's Collegiate Championship, which was held on Monday at the par-71 Marietta City Club, with a 35-over 319.

Sunday's action was called off due to bad weather, leaving just Monday's round.

Nicole West (Springdale, Md.) tied for the individual championship after shooting a 5-over 76, tying with South Carolina State's Honesty Biggers with the tournament's low round. Freshman Kayla Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished in a tie for third after shooting an 8-over 79, while Sydnee Mack (Las Vegas, Nev.) shot a 10-over 81 to finish seventh.

Iman Ellis (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) shot a 12-over 83 to finish in a tie for 10th, and Jessi Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ga.) shot a 16-over 87 to finish tied for 18th.

Bethune-Cookman finished second out of the nine teams with a 38-over 322, and South Carolina State had a 45-over 329 to finish third.

The Lady Pirates also won this event last year with a 678 (331-347), while Ellis won the individual crown with a 17-over 159 (80-79).

Hampton has won four tournaments this season, all coming in the team's last five events. After closing the fall season by taking the Savannah State Fall Invitational, the Lady Pirates won the Winston-Salem State Tournament and the Alabama A&M Golf Classic.

The Lady Pirates then finished in a tie for third at the Hartford Invitational.

The Lady Pirates will close out the 2009-10 season, along with the Pirates, on May 6-10 at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
