PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams will be at historic Franklin Field this Thursday through Saturday to compete in the 116th annual Penn Relays.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates combined for two relay titles in the Penn Relays last season; the Pirates won the 4x200-meter relay IC4A final with a 1:23.55, while the Lady Pirates won the 4x100-meter dash ECAC final with a time of 45.21.
The Pirates' 4x100-meter relay team also finished fifth with a 40.08, while the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay team ran a 57.65 to finish sixth.
The Lady Pirates ran a 1:35.75 in the 4x200-meter relay to finish seventh.
Among individual finishers, junior Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) ran a 14.21 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish seventh, while junior Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) finished 11th in the long jump Eastern final with a distance of 5.71 meters.
Senior Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Lady Pirates this past Saturday at the International Friendship & Freedom Games, winning the 800-meter run title with a meet-record 2:12.55, while also finishing second in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:48.10.
The Lady Pirates' 4x100-meter relay team took home the gold with a 46.66.
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) finished third in both the 800-meter run (2:14.17) and the 1,500-meter run (4:49.01), while Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) came in fourth in both races – running a 2:15.71 in the 800-meter run and a 4:49.67 in the 1,500-meter run.
Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) ran a 10:35.35 to finish second in the 3,000-meter run, while freshman Tyreka Arrington (Lanham, Md.) came in third with an 11:27.06.
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) ran a 1:01.41 to finish second in the 400-meter hurdles, with Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) coming in sixth with a 1:03.72. Petrice Richards (Manchester, Jamaica) finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a 23.85 and seventh in the 100-meter dash after running an 11.59.
Vassell finished fourth in both the 100-meter hurdles (13.95) and the long jump (5.55 meters). Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) finished fourth in both the shot put (12.25 meters) and the discus throw (37.84 meters) – while also finishing sixth in the javelin throw at 26.52 meters.
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) ran a 57.19 in the 400-meter dash to finish ninth.
The Pirates had this past weekend off; they last competed at the Murray Neely Invitational on April 10, where they combined for five event titles. Senior David Kimani (Kenya) won two of those titles, winning the 1,500-meter run (4:06.99) and the 5,000-meter run (15:44.78).
Freshman Michael Davenport (Pleasantville, N.J.) also won his first collegiate event at the Murray Neely Invitational, running a 10:09.41 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) jumped 1.95 meters to take the high jump, while Lamar Veale (Chesapeake, Va.) threw the javelin 49.90 meters to win that event.
This will be the last meet of the season for the Pirates and Lady Pirates before the 2010 MEAC Outdoor Championships, which will be held May 6-8 in Greensboro, N.C.
