GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second straight weekend, the Hampton University women's track & field team will compete at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T, as the Lady Pirates will compete in the International Friendship & Freedom Games on Saturday.
It will mark the first time the Lady Pirates have competed in this event since the 2007 outdoor season.
The Lady Pirates won two events at the Friendship & Freedom Games on April 21, 2007, led by Yvette Lewis' 1.78 meters in the high jump and the distance medley relay team taking gold after running a 12:18.10.
Lewis also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with a 13.28 and fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.62, while Krystle Medlin, now a volunteer assistant with the Lady Pirates, finished third in the 3,000-meter run with an 11:02.69.
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) ran an 11:10.70 in the 3,000-meter run to finish fourth.
The Lady Pirates competed in the Murray Neely Invitational this past Saturday, with Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) leading the way with an event title in the high jump. Calder jumped 1.64 meters to take that title.
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) ran a 2:19.92 in the 800-meter run to finish third for the Lady Pirates. Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) finished fourth in the shot put (12.37 meters) and the javelin throw (27.34 meters).
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) jumped 5.30 meters in the long jump to finish fourth.
The Pirates, who won five event titles this past Saturday at the Murray Neely Invitational, will take the weekend off before returning to action on April 21-24 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
