NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished ninth out of 18 teams in the Old Dominion Spring Open, hosted on Saturday at Sunday by Old Dominion University.
The Pirates finished its first regatta of the spring season with 184 points – 111 of those points came in the A division, with 73 more coming from the B division. The U.S. Naval Academy won the regatta with 83 points.
Hampton's 111 points in the A division placed the team in 11th in that division, where
Shane Rickie Horsford (Antigua, West Indies) and
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) competed.
Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Ian Guagliardo (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the Pirates to an eighth-place finish in the B division – finishing in the top 5 in three of their last four races.
Shoemaker and Guagliardo finished fourth in the seventh and eighth races, before coming in fifth in the ninth race.
Saturday saw sunny conditions over the gold cup and W-4 courses, and the Pirates were ninth after the first day of competition with 133 total points. The A division had 82 points on Saturday, while the B division compiled 51 points.
