VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Hampton University junior
Quanneisha Perry was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Perry (Decatur, Ga.) was also named First Team All-MEAC; heading into Thursday night's game against Howard, she leads the Lady Pirates (16-11, 11-4 MEAC) in scoring with 12.8 points per game and rebounding with 9.1 boards per contest. Perry sits ninth in the MEAC in scoring and third in the conference in rebounding.
Perry has 10 double-doubles on the season, winning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week three times and back-to-back MEAC Player of the Week honors. She was also named National Player of the Week by the Heritage Sports Radio Network on Feb. 18.
She also had 82 blocks on the season.
Sophomore
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named Second Team All-MEAC; heading into Thursday's regular-season finale, Fortune was third on the team in scoring at 9.8 points and 3.6 assists per contest – the fifth-best total in the MEAC.
Fortune scored in double figures 12 times this season, including a career-high 30 on 11-for-14 shooting on Feb. 15 in Hampton's 90-80 win over North Carolina A&T. Fortune also had a career-high 11 assists in that contest for her first career double-double.
Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team, averaging 6.5 rebounds per game heading into Thursday's game against Howard. Jones, who pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds against William & Mary and Morgan State, was three times named MEAC Rookie of the Week during the season.
Jones had two double-doubles on the season – against East Carolina (15 points, 14 rebounds) and against Radford (15 points, 10 rebounds).
Corin Adams of Morgan State earned MEAC Player of the Year honors, while Howard's Saadia Doyle was named MEAC Rookie of the Year and Bethune-Cookman's Vanessa Inge was named MEAC Coach of the Year.
