NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team showed its strength in light winds on Sunday, dominating the B Division en route to finishing second in the Ice-Free Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University.
Saturday's action was cancelled because of a lack of wind and a combination of clouds and fog, but there was a light breeze on Sunday.
Each division completed eight races; Hampton finished fourth in the A Division – where
Shane Rickie Horsford (Antigua, West Indies) and
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) sailed – while
Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Ian Guagliardo (Fredericksburg, Va.) finished second once, fifth one and won the other six races to dominate the B Division.
Hampton had 28 points in the A Division and 12 in the B Division.
The Pirates finished second with 40 points, one point ahead of third-place Virginia. Fordham won the team title with 29 overall points.
The Pirates will return to Newport News, Va. on Saturday and Sunday for the CNU 2-on-2 Invitational. For more information on Hampton University sailing, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
