NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team opened the spring 2010 schedule strong over the weekend, coming in second in the Christopher Newport 2-on-2 Classic, held Saturday and Sunday.

The 2-on-2 format, which is different from fleet racing, saw the Pirates compete strong, even with inconsistent winds. Hampton won almost all of the challenges, losing the last one, to finish second overall.

Host CNU won the team championship.

Virginia Tech, Salisbury and Drexel were among the other schools competing in the 2-on-2.

The Pirates will have their first fleet race – also known as a regatta – this weekend, when they head to Norfolk, Va. for the Old Dominion University Spring Open.
