HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team came out of the gates strong, stretching its win streak to four games as the Pirates upended Longwood 95-81 Monday night in a non-conference game at the HU Convocation Center.
Hampton set a season high in points scored, while overcoming a chippy contest that saw a combined six technical fouls and a flagrant foul. The Lancers opened the second half with a few buckets, closing to within 48-42 at the 17:46 mark on a Dana Smith layup, but the Pirates (12-17) responded with a layup from
Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) and five straight points from
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.).
Michael Freeman (Alexandria, Va.) threw down a one-handed slam dunk in transition with 1:25 to play, punctuating an emotional evening and cementing Hampton's fourth straight win. Three technicals were called in the final 1:25, with Hampton closing the contest making six of eight free throws.
Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.) led four Pirates in double figures with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting and a 6-for-8 effort from the line, while
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.),
Charles Funches (Bayonne, N.J.) and Morgan each added 16. Freeman led the Pirates with seven rebounds.
Hampton shot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from the floor, making eight of its 23 3-point attempts. Longwood shot 54.9 percent (28-for-51) from the floor, though the Lancers (12-19) out-rebounded Hampton 35-31.
Smith led Longwood with 20 points, While Martiz Washington added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Antwan Carter scored 13 points and Billy Robinson Jr. added 10.
The Pirates jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the 13:56 mark of the first half, culminating an 11-0 run with a layup from Simpson. Longwood responded with a 9-2 spurt of its own, closing to within 30-26 at the 5:59 mark on a 3-pointer from Washington.
Washington sank another trey with 3:16 left in the first half to cut Hampton's lead to 35-33, but the Pirates responded with a 10-4 run to close the half, going into the locker room up 48-37. Hampton was one point shy of its season-high for a half; the Pirates scored 49 points in the second half at La Salle to open the season on Nov. 14, 2009.
Simpson led the Pirates with 16 points in the first half, while Pellum added nine points.
Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) grabbed a team-high three rebounds in the first half, though Longwood held a 17-10 advantage on the glass in the opening frame.
The Pirates shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the floor in the first half, making four of their 10 3-point attempts. Longwood, behind Washington's 14 points, shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) in the first half.
Carter had eight rebounds to lead the Lancers at the half.
