. -- The Hampton University women’s basketball team continued its winning streak at five with a victory against South Carolina State, 67-47 at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center on Saturday afternoon. 

The Lady Pirates (11-10, 7-3 MEAC) were firing on all cylinders in the second half. A 3-pointer by Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) at the 16:59 mark gave the Lady Pirates a 26-point lead (40-14). The Lady Bulldogs got within 17 (29-46) when Whitney Wiley made two free throws at the 10:47 mark; however, that was the closest they got to the Lady Pirates. Hampton went on a 15-8 run when Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas)hit her fourth 3-pointer at the 4:03 mark, which gave the Lady Pirates their largest lead at 63-34. 

The Lady Pirates started the game on a 23-6 run, which ended with Jenkins hitting a 3-pointer at the 9:59 mark. The stingy “D” of the Lady Pirates forced 15 turnovers in the first half and made 18 points off the Lady Bulldogs’ mistakes. 

The Lady Pirates were led in scoring and rebounds by Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.)with 20 and six. Lewis had 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and had a career -high in 3-pointers made with four. Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.)also contributed with 10 points, six rebounds and a team-high four steals. 

“Coach( Six) wanted me to be very aggresive on both sides of the floor. I was very confident in shooting the ball today. I feel good redeeming myself for the team.” said Lewis

Wiley led the Lady Bulldogs with 23 points. 

The Lady Pirates shot 47.2 percent from the floor, which is their second highest this season and shot 88.9 percent from the free-throw line, which is highest team percentage this year. 

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they face the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State at 6 p.m. at Clarence E. Gaines Center.
