FAIRFAX, Va. –
The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams will resume their indoor seasons on Saturday, heading to the George Mason Field House on the campus of George Mason University to compete in the Father Diamond Invitational.

Events will begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s long jump and the men’s weight throw. Running events will start at noon with the women’s 4x800-meter relay.

Hampton last competed in the Father Diamond Invitational during the 2007-08 indoor season, coming away with three combined event titles. Former Pirate Anthony Easter won the 400-meter dash in the 2008 Father Diamond Invitational with a 49.86, while Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.), then a freshman, took the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.17.

Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) won the 1,000-meter race in the 2008 meet, running a 3:06.76. Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) ran a 7.61 in the 60-meter dash to finish second, while Jocelyn Watkins (Ellenwood, Ga.) threw the shot put 12.10 meters to finish fourth.

Brandon Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) added a fourth-place finish of his own, after jumping 14.46 meters in the triple jump.

The Pirates last competed on Dec. 11-12, when they competed in the Golden Flash Gala in Kent, Ohio. Junior Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) won the long jump title for his third event championship of the season, with a distance of 7.25 meters. Walker also finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.06.

Anderson also finished second in the 60-meter dash after running a 6.89, while Justin Battle (Somerset, N.J.) ran a 6.94 to come in third. David Kimani (Kenya) finished third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:51.60.

The Lady Pirates won three event titles the last time they competed, on Dec. 5 at the CNU Holiday Open. Vassell won the 55-meter hurdles race with a 7.90, before helping the 4x400-meter relay team win the gold with a time of 3:51.26. The distance medley relay team also won a gold medal, turning in a combined time of 12:22.12.

After this weekend’s meet, the Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, Jan. 15, when they travel to the Big Apple for the New York City Gotham Cup.
