MONTREAL, Quebec – Former Hampton University defensive back Sam Pope has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, as announced on Jan. 22 by Vice President/General Manager Jim Popp.

Pope (St. Helena Island, S.C.) played in seven games in his senior season in 2008, recording 26 tackles (16 solo, 10 assisted). He also had 2.5 sacks for 10 yards to go along with nine pass breakups and a forced fumble on the season. Pope had a career-high nine tackles (two solo, seven assisted) against North Carolina A&T.

As a junior for the Pirates, Pope made eight starts and made 41 tackles (32 solo) on the season. He also picked off five passes. He picked off two passes against Princeton, returning them for a total of 96 yards – including a 65-yard touchdown return.

Pope transferred to Hampton from the University of South Carolina. Before joining the Gamecocks, Southwest Mississippi Community College, where in 2006 he intercepted three passes and returned two for touchdowns. He was a three-star prospect, with Rivals.com ranking him as the No. 54 JUCO player in the country.
