HAMPTON TRACK TO COMPETE IN CHAPEL HILL

Meet Notes

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams will head to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday to compete in the UNC Classic at the Eddie Smith Field House, looking to carry over the momentum created last weekend in New York.

The Lady Pirates took home eight event titles at the New York City Gotham Cup, led by three from senior Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.), who took the 60-meter dash in a season-best 7.51 before setting a school-record in winning the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:10.74. McCorory was also on the gold medal-winning 4x400-meter relay team — along with Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.), Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) and Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) — with a time of 3:40.79.

Vassell also won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.62.

Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) ran a 5:08.26 to take the mile run title, while Calder also won the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters and Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) jumped 5.36 meters to win the unseeded long jump. Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) won the weight throw with a distance of 15.68 meters.

The Pirates won a pair of event titles, thanks to freshman Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) and junior Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.). Fraction won the first event title of his college career, running a 1:54.69 to take the seeded 800-meter run, while Walker took his fourth event title of the season by winning the 60-meter hurdles in 7.93.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates last competed in an indoor meet in Chapel Hill during the 2007-08 season, when they took part in the Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic. Former Pirate Brandon Lynch turned in the best finish for the men in that meet, coming in sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.24. Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) finished seventh in the 60-meter dash with a 6.90, and Walker ran an 8.05 in the 60-meter hurdles to finish eighth.

Former Lady Pirate Nielah Blaylock gave the women their best finish in that meet, throwing the shot put 12.14 meters to finish sixth. Chandra Pulliam came in seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69.
