NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams had a strong showing at the New York City Gotham Cup on Friday at the Armory Track & Field Center, combining to win 10 event titles.
The Lady Pirates took home eight of those titles, with senior
Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) accounting for three of them. McCorory ran a 7.51 to win the 60-meter dash, before taking the 500-meter dash with a school-record time of 1:10.74. She was also part of the 4x400-meter relay team – along with
Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.),
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) and
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) – that took the gold with a 3:40.79.
Vassell also won the 60-meter hurdles after running an 8.62.
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) ran a 5:08.26 to take the mile run, while Calder won the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters and
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) jumped 5.36 meters to take the long jump title.
Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) won the weight throw with a distance of 15.68 meters.
Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished second in the unseeded 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.41, while the 4x800-meter relay team and distance medley squad each finished second. Calder, Richmond, Harris and
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) teamed up to run a 9:35.89 in the 4x800-meter relay, while Jones, Harris, Morris and
Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) combined to run a 12:24.24 in the distance medley.
Freshman
Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) won his first event title at Hampton, winning the seeded 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.69.
Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) won the other event title for the Pirates, taking the 60-meter hurdles in 7.93.
Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) finished second in the high jump with a height of 2.01 meters, while the distance medley team – with
Michael Davenport (Pleasantville, N.J.), Christopher Williams,
Bryan Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and
Berian White (Newark, Del.) – came in second with a time of 10:21.93.
Aaron Anderson (Fort Washington, Md.) ran a 6.93 in the 60-meter dash to finish fifth, while
Devon Brown (Laurel, Md.) came in sixth with a 6.95.
Justin Battle (Somerset, N.J.) ran a 7.04 to come in eighth.
Lawrence Campbell (Peekskill, N.Y.) finished eighth in the 500-meter dash with a 1:05.29.
