PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s cross country teams will open the 2009 season this Saturday, when they will compete in the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lid-Lifter Invitational at the UMES Cross Country Course.
Last year’s Lid-Lifter Invitational was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Hanna, but the Pirates and Lady Pirates ran the following weekend at UMES in the Cappy Anderson Invitational. The men finished eighth with 178 points, while the Lady Pirates came in fifth with 146 points.
The University of Pittsburgh won both team titles last season.
Daniel Edmund ran the best time of the meet for the Pirates, finishing 27th with a 27:44.33 on the 8K course.
Bryan Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.) is the top returning Pirate from last year’s Cappy Anderson Invitational, where he ran a 30:54.89 to finish 50th.
Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Lady Pirates with an 18:44.04 on the 5K course, finishing seventh.
Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) also finished in the top 15 in that meet, coming in 14th with a time of 19:17.48.
