LADY PIRATES FINISH THIRD, PIRATES COME IN 10TH IN PGA MINORITY

The Hampton University women’s golf team finish third out of three teams at the 23rd annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday at the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses with a three-day score of 1,027 (+163). The men’s golf team finished 10th out of 11 teams with a three-day score of 966 (+102).

Geffory Napper (Bowie, Md.) led the Pirates with a 22-over par 238 to come in a tie for 34th, while Sidney Fields shot a 243 (+27) to finish in a tie for 38th and Javier Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) fired a 245 (+29) to tie for 40th. Jason Sherer shot a 34-over 250 over three days to come in 45th, while Arturo Saro (South Gate, Calif.) finished in a tie for 46th after firing a 251 (+35). Fields shot the best round for Hampton during Sunday’s third round, firing a 3-over 75.

The Pirates fired four rounds in the 70s throughout the tournament. Napper followed up a first-round 81 with a 79 in the second round and a 78 on Sunday.

Dionne West (Springdale, Md.) shot a 37-over 253 to lead the Lady Pirates with a 10th-place finish, shooting a team-best 77 during Saturday’s second round. Iman Ellis (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) fired a 255 (+39) to finish 11th, while Hailey Hill (Charlotte, N.C.) came in 12th after shooting a 40-over 256. Sydnee Mack (Las Vegas, Nev.) posted a three-day score of 263 (+47) to come in 13th, while Jessi Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ga.) fired a 74-over 290 and finished 14th.

Tennessee State won the Division I men’s title, shooting a 4-under 860, while Fayetteville State won the Division II men’s title with a 6-under 858. Texas-Pan American took the women’s title with a three-day score of 922 (+58).

North Carolina’s Dustin Thompson was the top-ranked men’s player in the individual standings from the tournament, firing an even-par 216. Florida State’s Sara Young earned the women’s top ranking with a 13-over 229.
