Hampton, Va. - The NCAA Division I Committee on Athletics Certification has announced that Hampton University is among the 35 Division I member institutions that have been certified.
The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution’s athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993.
The certification process includes a review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; equity; and student-athlete well-being. A designation of certified means that an institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.
“This certification process demonstrates Hampton University’s commitment to our student athletes, principled athletic operations and state-of-the-art facilities,” said HU President Dr. William R. Harvey.
Lonza Hardy Jr., HU director of athletics, added, “Operating our athletics program in substantial conformity to NCAA rules and regulations is a broad-based effort that involves the entire University and local community. We are certainly grateful to everyone for their involvement and for helping to ensure the continued success of our program, academically and athletically.”
Hampton completed its first certification self-study in 1998. At the 1997 Convention, the Division I membership voted to change the frequency of athletics certification from once every five years to once every 10 years and to require a five-year interim-status report.
