HAMPTON TENNIS SWINGS PAST UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The Hampton University men's and women's tennis squads defeated host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday. The Lady Pirates took down the Lady Hawks 6-1, while the men's team downed UMES 7-0.

On the women's side, Hampton won five out of six singles matches and took two of the three contests in doubles play.

Na-Hyun Baek (Seoul, Korea) won at No.1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Jovanna Sangria (Long Beach, Calif.) won 6-0, 6-0 over Fatonimia Ba. Maria Ycaza (Guayaquil, Ecuador) also won 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Barenese Myers (Beverly Hills, Calif.) won 8-3 in one set, along with Livia Branco (Valinhos, Brazil) recording a convincing victory of 8-0.

The men's squad won every match, not giving the Hawks a chance to breath on the second day of spring. Gellert Varga (Becej, Serbia) and Louis Bell defeated their opponents in one set. Each member of this team won their single.

The Hampton women's tennis team is 3-5, having won three straight matches. The men's tennis team is not far behind, 2-6 on the season and dominating.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C. for a match against Winthrop.
