HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams will hit the road again this weekend to close out the 2009 portion of their indoor schedules. The Pirates will travel to Kent, Ohio, while the Lady Pirates will head to Princess Anne, Md.

The Pirates will compete in the Golden Flash Gala on Friday and Saturday at the Kent State Field House, while the Lady Pirates will compete in the UMES Coach O Collegiate Invite on Friday and Saturday at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.

This will be Hampton’s first year competing in the Golden Flash Gala; the Lady Pirates competed in the UMES Coach O Invitational in the 2007-08 indoor season, winning eight event titles and 24 top-five finishes.

Junior Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) won a pair of event titles last week in the season-opening Navy Invitational, taking the long jump at 6.98 meters before winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.90 – which was a provisional NCAA qualifier.

Junior Damon Dixon (Great Falls, Va.) finished second in the high jump at 1.99 meters, while also finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.17.

The 4x800-meter relay team (Lawrence Campbell (Peekskill, N.Y.), Bradley Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.), David Kimani, Xavier Fraction) ran a 7:52.96 to finish second.

Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) also finish fourth in the mile run with a 4:21.58, while Kimani (Kenya) came in fourth in the 3,000-meter run after running an 8:38.81. Fraction and Kimani also teamed with Berian White (Newark, Del.) and Cedric Rainey (Richardson, Texas) to finish fifth in the distance medley, running a 10:27.12.

Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) also won a pair of event titles in the CNU Holiday Open this past weekend, taking the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.90 before helping the 4x400-meter relay team – along with Rachel Burrell (Hampton, Va.), Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) and Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) – win the gold with a combined time of 3:51.26.

Hampton’s B relay team – Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.), Kayla Lee, Kamilah Browne and Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) – finished fifth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:05.83.

The Lady Pirates also won the distance medley relay, when Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.), Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica), Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Jahlisa Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 12:22.12.

Freshman Tyreka Arrington (Lanham, Md.) ran an 11:36.21 in the 3,000-meter run to finish fourth.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action after the New Year, when both squads travel to Fairfax, Va. on Jan. 9 to compete in the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason University.
