The Hampton University men's golf team completed the fall 2008 season the weekend before last in the Savannah State Invitational, a four-tournament slate leading up to the forthcoming spring 2009 campaign. Below is a look back at those four tournaments.
Sea Trail Intercollegiate Golf Tournament (Sept. 19-21)
SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- Hampton University finished 18th out of 18 teams with a three-day score of 954. Freshman Arturo Saro was the highest-finishing Pirate, coming in a tie for 43rd with a 9-over 225.
Christopher Frazier finished with a 21-over par 237, in a tie for 83rd, while Geffory Napper came in tied for 90th with a 32-over 248. Javier Lopez shot 35-over to finish 94th, and Jared Williams was 95th with a 42-over 258.
Murray State won the team title with a three-day score of 868. Steve Dressel of Elon won the individual crown with a 4-under par 212.
Coca-Cola National Black Alumni Invitational (Sept. 26-28)
ATLANTA, Ga. – Hampton University finishing 15th out of 20 teams with a two-day score of 630 at Browns Mill Golf Course. Arturo Saro was the highest-finishing Pirate, coming in a tie for 39th with a 10-over 154.
Javier Lopez finished with a 14-over par 158, good enough for a tie for 64th, while Christopher Frazier finished 68th with a 15-over 159. Jared Williams shot an 18-over-par 162 to finish in a tie for 73rd. Geffory Napper shot a 20-over 164 to finish 78th.
South Carolina State won the team title with a two-day score of 575, 1-under par. Hector Arroyave of South Carolina State won the individual championship by firing a 7-under 137.
2008 Men's Holiday Inn Colonial Golf Tournament (Oct. 13-14)
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Hampton University men's golf team finished 11th out of 12 teams at the 2008 Men's Holiday Inn Colonial Golf Tournament with a two-day score of 664. Christopher Frazier led the Pirates with a 14-over 158, finishing in a tie for 27th.
Freshman Arturo Saro finished in a tie for 38th, shooting a 17-over 161. Jared Williams (30-over par 174) came in 53rd, while Javier Lopez finished 54th with a 32-over 176. Sidney Fields shot a 179 to finish 56th.
Clarion University won the team title with a two-day score of 601. Robert Morris' Joe Kabana won the individual crown with a 1-over 145, beating Chicago State's Andrew Pleasant in a playoff.
Savannah State University Tiger Fall Invitational (Nov. 10-11)
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Hampton University men's golf team finished ninth in the Savannah State University Tiger Fall Invitational at Henderson Golf Club, recording a two-day score of 683. Christopher Frazier was the highest-finishing Pirate, coming in a tie for 19th with a 20-over 162.
Javier Lopez shot a 31-over 173 on the par-71 layout, finishing in a tie for 36th. Arturo Saro and Jared Williams each finished in a tie for 38th after shooting a 32-over-par 174. Geffory Napper finished 49th after shooting a two-day score of 181.
South Carolina State won the team title with a two-day score of 614. Roberto Cacho of South Carolina State took the individual championship by beating Florida A&M's James Petty Jr. in a playoff after both players fired a 7-over 149.
