COLUMBIA, SC – Three first-place finishes by the Hampton University track teams on Saturday topped a stellar weekend at the 30-team Gamecock Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina on Saturday.
The Hampton women took three of the top six spots in the 1500 meters headed by freshman
Faith Keitany who won the race in 4:38.93.
Janet Okeago was fourth in that race in 4:43.05, while
Pollyanna Velasco took sixth in 4:46.12. Velasco also took fourth in the 800 meters running a solid 2:12.25.
Both women's relay teams took fifth as the 4x100 grouping of
Tiara Robinson,
Saenea Williams,
Mallory Pitchford and
Meshala Morton ran 46.59. In the 4x400, the pairing of
Alysha Evans,
Erin Morrison, Morton and
Sashana Hinds ran a 3:48.97.
On the men's side, Hampton took first place finishes in the 800 and 1500 meters.
Geoffrey McCullough ran a 3:58.56 to win the 1500 meters, while
Stanley Davis took the 800 meters in 1:49.67.
In the 1500,
Eric Ellis joined McCullough in the top five finishing fourth in 4:07.01, while
Tayvon Burris took fifth in the 800 in 1:51.00 and McCullough ran 1:53.69 to finish eighth.
Other top finishers for the men included
Jaelen Williams who was second in the 400 hurdles in 51.85,
Michael Crockett was fifth in the discus with a throw of 147-8½,
Justin Beatty was tied for fifth in the 400 in 47.41 and the 4x400 relay group of Beatty,
Rayon Black,
Jerrick Powell and Williams running 3:11.43.
A smaller group of athletes went to Christopher Newport University for the New Captains Classic where
Kameryn Trussell was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.21,
Silvia Zerbini was third in the 100 hurdles in 15.13 and Tamadj Fisher took fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-1.
Both teams will next participate in the Duke Invitational next weekend in Durham, N.C.
