HAMPTON, Va.- The Hampton University women's tennis team defeated Norfolk State in a dominating performance bringing home the win 5-2 on Monday at Neilson-Screen Stadium. This win marks the Pirates first MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Northern Division regular season finish since 2009 and the first 10-win regular season since 2007.
Hampton won all three double matches clinching the team point. Mariam Mitaishvili and Kristina Titova defeated Dajana Cvjetkovic and Liza Gordeeva 6-1 at line #1. Mikaela Pierce and Cherise Slocombe topped Ana Popovic and Bruna Goncalves 6-2 at line #2, while Haley Mullins and Anastasiia Romanova knocked off Paula Fortuno and Aranza Mellet 6-4 at line #3.
In singles, Mariam Mitaishvili defeated Liza Gordeeva 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at line #2. Cherise Slocombe rallied to defeat Ana Popovic 4-6,6-2,6-3 at line #3. Haley Mullins held off Paula Fortuno 6-4,6-7(4-7), 7-5 at line #4 and Anastasiia Romanova topped Aranza Mellet 6-1,6-2 at line #6. Mullins win was the dual match clincher for Hampton.
Hampton (10-3) returns action on Tuesday at noon taking on East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. They will then be off until the MEAC Championship, taking place at Old Dominion University starting on Thursday, April 20. The Lady Pirates will take on the #4-seed from the southern division starting at 8:30 am.
