HAMPTON, Va. – Another busy weekend for the Hampton University track teams saw them compete at the prestigious New York Armory in the Armory Invitational and locally at the Vince Brown Invitational at Christopher Newport University.
ARMORY INVITATIONAL
The men's team took 13
th out of 31 scoring teams with 13 points, while the women were 26
th with five points. Both teams combined for 12 IC4A/ECAC qualifying times in the two-day meet.
For the men, freshman
Moffat Wanjiru finished tenth in the 60 meters with an IC4A qualifying time of 6.92 and also qualified in the 200 meters running a 22.22.
Freshman
Jaelen Williams ran the fastest time by a U.S. collegian to take second in the event in a qualifying time of 48.84.
Hampton had three qualifiers in the 500 meters as junior
Justin Beatty won his division edging out a runner from South Carolina with a qualifying time of 1:04.06. In the invitational 500, senior
Rayon Black took fourth in 1:02.84, while junior
Gabriel Johnson took fifth in 1:03.93.
Charles Graham took fifth in the 60 hurdles running a 7.94 for a qualifying time, while the 4x400 relay team of Williams,
Jerrick Powell, Johnson and Black took fifth in 3:15.00 to also qualify for the IC4A.
The distance medley relay team of
Geoffrey McCullough, Johnson,
Stanley Davis and
Emmanuel Too took third in its race with an IC4A qualifying time of 9:59.89.
On the women's side, junior
Meshala Morton qualified for the ECAC meet next month with a 24.56 preliminary time in the 200 meters. Freshman
Mallory Pitchford qualified in the 60 hurdles running 8.60 to finish 13
th in the event.
Top finishes belonged to the relay teams in New York for the women as the 4x200 and 4x400 teams took seventh in their races. In the 4x200, the quartet of Pitchford,
Saenea Williams,
Alysha Evans and
Jayme Thomas clocked a 1:43.39 to finish seventh. The 4x400 grouping of
Erin Morrison, Morton,
Tiara Robinson and
Sashana Hinds ran a 3:52.73.
VINCE BROWN INVITATIONAL
Sophomore
Kylie McMillan won the 60 hurdles leading three teammates in the top five with an ECAC qualifying time of 8.62. Fellow sophomores
Kaitlin Scott (8.93/2
nd) and
Sydney Davis (9.10/5
th) rounded out the top five for Hampton.
Freshman
Alycia Higgins took third in the 5000 meters in 18:27.65, while
Ashley Modeste was seventh in the 800 in 2:26.43.
In the weight events, Hampton had several strong performances highlighted by Corneisha Mitchell who won the shot put with a throw of 42-2.25 and took third in the weight throw with a toss of 45-1/2.
The long jump saw
Jaelen Leonard take second in 18-5.25, while
Kayla Key was third in 17-9.5.
Tamadji Fisher was fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-1, while
Quadaisha Neal was tenth in the pole vault in 8-8.25.
For the men, freshman
Isaiah Norris was sixth in the 60 meters in 7.12, and sophomore
Chace Washington-Saunders was sixth in 22.98 in the 200. Hampton had a pair in the top ten of the 400 with
Khalil Gary in seventh (51.98) and
Dominick Patterson in ninth (52.12).
In the field events, Jonathan Swain was fifth in the high jump in 6-3/4, while
Trey Clark took third in the pole vault with a leap of 14-1.25.
Donmanique Hardy was seventh in the long jump (21-10.75) while
Joshua Hunter took sixth in the shot put with a toss of 46-6.25.
Next up for the teams will be the Liberty Elite Invitational in Lynchburg, Va. next weekend.
