PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- In a game of runs, homestanding Temple had the last using a 22-4 third quarter to propel themselves to a 65-56 win over Hampton on Thursday night.

After trailing 9-2 following a Tanaya Atkinson layup with 6:21 left in the opening quarter, Hampton used a 16-0 run over the next 3:28 as part of a first quarter ending 21-3 burst as the Lady Pirates held a 23-12 lead after one on a DeJane James free throw.
Hampton pushed the lead to 12 points twice in the second as Allina Starr hit a jumper with 4:20 left in the half to lead 32-20.  Temple then scored the next six points, but Starr hit a pair of free throws to close the half with Hampton up 34-26.
James hit a jumper at the 7:16 mark of the third quarter to put Hampton up 38-36, which unfortunately turned into the final points of the quarter for Hampton. Temple closed out on a 14-0 run to lead 50-38 at the end of three.
Hampton turned up the defense in the fourth and made another surge on the heels of an 11-2 run over a 3:31 span to trail 60-56 on a pair of James free throws with 1:58 left. That closed the scoring for Hampton as the Owls went 3-of-4 from the line and hit a layup in the final stretch.
James was the leading scorer for Hampton with 16 points, six assists and six steals. Starr added 13 points, six rebounds and six steals and
Jephany Brown scored 13 points with four assists and three steals. Hampton forced 35 Temple turnovers and came away with 24 steals, but was doomed with 30.8% shooting from the field and being out-rebounded 50-26.
The Lady Pirates are now off until December 20 when they visit Texas Christian University for a 7:30 pm tip.
