BALANCED ATTACK LEADS PIRATES OVER COKER

HAMPTON, Va. – Five players scored in double figures at the HU Convocation Center Friday night as the Hampton University men's basketball team closed out non-conference play with a 94-69 win over Div. II Coker.
 
The Pirates improved to 3-10 on the season.
 
Trevond Barnes led the Pirates with a career-high 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting and a 6-for-7 effort from the free throw line. Charles Wilson-Fisher and Lysander Bracey each added 12 points, while Kalin Fisher and Jermaine Marrow both added 10 points.
 
Wilson-Fisher had eight rebounds, tying him for the team high with Trey Carver, while Marrow dished out a team-high five assists.
 
It was Hampton's first time with five players in double figures since Feb. 24, 2014 at Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
The Pirates shot 44.4 percent (32-for-72) for the game – including a 47.2 percent clip in the second half – while making eight of their 29 3-pointers. Hampton also went 22-for-35 (62.9 percent) from the free throw line and outrebounded Coker 43-31.
 
Coker held an early 7-5 lead, but the Pirates responded with an 11-2 run to take a 16-9 lead at the 10:25 mark following a pair of Bracey free throws. JaQuez Motley cut the lead to 18-14 with a 3-point play at the 9:02 mark, before Hampton went on a 10-1 run to go up 28-15 on a Lawrence Cooks trey.
 
The Cobras clawed back to within six, before the Pirates went on a 13-2 run to take a 43-26 lead after a Barnes layup with 57 seconds left in the half. Coker stopped the run with a late trey, but the Pirates went into the locker room with a 43-29 lead.
 
Barnes had 14 points at the half.
 
Hampton scored the first seven points of the second half – a Barnes tip-in followed by threes from Cooks and Barnes – taking a 50-29 lead at the 18:36 mark. Coker's first field goal of the half came at the 17:27 mark, and a trey from Jalal Abdul-Azeez with 17:07 left cut the lead to 52-35.
 
But Hampton answered with an 11-2 run, taking a 63-37 lead after a Fisher free throw with 15:06 left.
 
Motley cut the lead to 67-45 with 13:57 remaining, before the Pirates scored 17 of the next 21 points to open up an 84-49 lead after Bracey nailed a three with 8:37 to play. Branden Aughburns' free throws with 3:09 remaining were Hampton's final points of the night, giving the Pirates a 94-61 lead.
 
Coker (5-8) shot 44.0 percent (22-for-50) from the floor, but struggled from the free throw line (16-for-27, 59.3 percent) and committed 32 turnovers.
 
Hampton scored 37 points off those miscues.
 
Motley led the Cobras with 16 points.
