HARRISONBURG, VA. –
Malia Tate-DeFreitas and
Kaylah Lupoe each recorded double-doubles for Hampton on Friday night but the Lady Pirates dropped a 71-50 decision to James Madison at the JMU Convocation Center.
Tate-DeFreita opened the game with a 3-pointer from the left corner as Hampton opened the game with a flurry. Their lead grew to 11-6 on a
Kaylah Lupoe layup with 6:04 left in the first.
JMU closed the quarter on a 7-1 spurt as a Kamiah Smalls layup to lead 13-11 with 53 seconds. A Tate-DeFreitas free throw closed the quarter with Hampton down 13-12.
To start the second, JMU continued its run pushing the advantage to 37-21 with a 3-pointer by Aneah Young with 24 seconds left in the half.  Tate-DeFreitas closed the half by pulling up from half-court and draining a 3-pointer as Hampton trailed 37-24 at intermission.
In the second half, Hampton made a couple flurries cutting the deficit to nine points twice. A Tate-DeFreitas layup with 6:13 left in the third capped a 6-0 run to make it 41-32, but that was as close as it got.
???????Tate-DeFreitas finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Lupoe added 17 and 12 boards to lead Hampton. Â
Jephany Brown was next with eight points and a season-high three blocked shots. As a team, Hampton was 17-of-63 from the floor (27.0%), 2-of-11 from 3-point range (18.2%) and 14-of-27 from the line (51.9%).Â
Kamiah Smalls paced JMU with 18 points and Precious Hall added 16.  Da'Lisha Griffin had nine points and a game-high 14 boards. JMU out-rebounded Hampton 50-44.Â
Hampton will play its first home game of the season on December 7 when they host the Temple Owls at 5:30 pm at the Hampton University Convocation Center.
