PIRATES FALL TO WILDCATS IN BARCLAYS CLASSIC

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Despite 15 points from freshman Jermaine Marrow, the Hampton University men's basketball team opened the Barclays Classic on Sunday with an 89-67 loss to Kansas State in the Bramlage Coliseum.
 
The Pirates are now 1-2 on the season.
 
Marrow went 6-for-17 from the field and made two of his four 3-pointers, while also notching three assists. Lawrence Cooks was the other Pirate in double figures, pouring in 10 points and dishing out a team-high four assists.
 
The Pirates shot 44.1 percent (26-for-59) from the floor for the game – including a 50 percent clip (15-for-30) in the first half. Hampton was also 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) from behind the arc.
 
Charles Wilson-Fisher gave the Pirates an 8-6 lead in the early minutes of the first half, before the Wildcats responded with a 17-2 run to take a 23-10 lead on a Xavier Sneed 3-pointer with 11:56 remaining in the first half.
 
Hampton then scored 19 of the next 30 points to cut the lead to 34-29 after a 3-pointer from Marrow at the 6:01 mark, but K-State ended the half on a 12-7 spurt to take a 46-36 lead at the half.
 
Fourteen of Marrow's 15 points came in the first half.
 
K-State held a double-digit lead throughout the second half, though Wilson-Fisher cut the lead to 55-45 with 15:18 remaining after sinking a pair of free throws. But the Wildcats answered with a 20-4 run, taking a 75-49 lead after a Barry Brown layup at the 7:23 mark.
 
That was K-State's largest lead of the game.
 
Kansas State (3-0) shot 58.3 percent (28-for-48) from the floor, including nearly 61 percent in the first half, and held a 36-28 edge on the glass.
 
Wesley Iwundu led four Wildcats in double figures with 23 points.
