CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Senior guard
Darrion Pellum scored a season-high 33 points for the Hampton University men's basketball team as it held off Longwood Friday afternoon in the consolation game of the Dr. Pepper Classic at The McKenzie Arena.
Hampton (5-9) snapped a six-game losing streak with the 82-79 win over the Lancers.
“It was a great win for us against a really good team in Longwood,” said Pirates head coach Edward Joyner Jr. “We kept to our game plan for the entire game, and it proved to be the difference and helped us to get the win today.”
With 4:28 left to play, the Pirates were up by 11 points, 78-67, and the Lancers went on an 11-0 run to pull within 78-77 with 1:47 to play. Junior guard
Jasper Williams (Washington, D.C.) hit a deep 3-pointer to give the Pirates some much-needed cushion.
Longwood would not go away, though, as Martiz Washington made a layup with eight seconds left to close out a 13-4 run. The Pirates defense held on, though, to preserve the win.
Pellum (Hampton, Va.) was named to the Dr. Pepper Classic All Tournament Team.
Hampton came out in the first half looking like it was ready to play, scoring 45 points in the first half (five more than the Pirates scored in their last game), with 26 of those points coming in the paint.
Pellum led all scorers in the first half with 19 points, shooting 50 percent (6-for-12) from the floor, with three of those shots coming from beyond the 3-point arc. The Pirates shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half, making 18 of 37 shots taken.
Longwood would stay in the game throughout, shooting 41 percent from the floor and making eight of 16 3-pointers in the half to head into the intermission down 45-37.
Hampton finished the game making 31 of 64 shots to shoot 48 percent from the floor, scoring 38 points in the paint.
On top of Pellum's 33 points, Williams finished with 14 points and sophomore forward
