HAMPTON, Va. – Facing stiff competition and ideal conditions, the Hampton University sailing team finished seventh at the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional Regatta, held Saturday and Sunday at Strawberry Banks.
The Pirates finished with 140 total points, finishing nine points ahead to George Washington in eighth and seven points behind Eckerd in sixth. With 71 points, Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Ian Guagliardo (Fredericksburg, Va.) finished seventh in the B Division, while the A Division, with captain Shane Rickie Horsford (Antigua, West Indies) and Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.), also came in seventh with 69 points.
College of Charleston, the No. 5 team in the nation, won the regatta in convincing fashion with 49 total points, while No. 18 Old Dominion came in a tie for second with 82 points. No. 13 South Florida and No. 11 Navy, the other two nationally-ranked teams in the regatta, also finished with 82 points.
Conditions were favorable throughout the weekend, as the sun shined both days and winds stayed largely constant. Winds were out of the north on Saturday as teams ran a modified Olympic course, before the winds shifted to the south on Sunday.
The Pirates will return to action this Saturday and Sunday, when they head to Williamsburg, Va. for the South Spring Qualifier. Two spots for the America Trophy regatta will be available.
