PIRATES OUTLAST PANTHERS IN OVERTIME

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team needed overtime for its sixth straight win Tuesday night, but the Pirates defeated Georgia State 60-56 at the HU Convocation Center.

Georgia State led 36-28 with 13:21 left in the second half, but the Pirates responded with a 16-4 run – a run punctuated at the 6:38 mark by a monstrous breakaway dunk from sophomore forward Koron Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) to give Hampton a 44-40 lead.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) had 13 of Hampton's 16 points in that run.

Hampton (6-1) and Georgia State traded the lead in the closing minutes, before Eric Buckner tied the game at 49-49 with 17 seconds on a two-handed slam. Pellum's jumper at the buzzer hit the front of the rim and didn't fall.

Hampton would outscore the Panthers 11-7 in the overtime period, with junior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) giving the Pirates the lead for good with a fall-away layup with 2:49 left to play.

Senior guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) made four of six free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

The Pirates shot 33 percent (15-for-45) from the floor and made 26 of their 39 free throws. Pellum led the Pirates with 21 points on 8-for-18 shooting, while junior guard Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) added 13 points and Tunnell chipped in 10.

Senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds.

The Panthers (2-3) shot 39 percent (22-for-57) from the floor and out-rebounded Hampton 41-35. However, the Pirates did force Georgia State into 18 turnovers.

The Pirates also had nine steals.

Georgia State led 25-22 at the half, shooting 11-for-30 (37.0 percent) from the floor. The Panthers also out-rebounded Hampton 23-14. After Hampton opened the game on a 7-2 run, the Panthers responded with a 15-6 run to take a 17-13 lead at the 7:18 mark after a Buckner dunk.

A pair of free throws from Tunnell at the 2:29 mark gave Hampton a 21-20 lead, but Dante Curry hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 left in the half to put Georgia State back on top.

The Pirates shot 22 percent (4-for-18) in the first half, though they did make 12 of their 16 free throws in the opening frame. Morgan led the Pirates with eight points at the break.

Buckner had a game-high 12 points at the half for the Panthers.
