LADY PIRATES TO FACE SDSU IN PRESEASON WNIT SECOND ROUND

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will face off against the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State on Monday at 8 p.m. EST in Frost Arena in the second round of the Preseason WNIT.

The Lady Pirates (1-0), in their second season under head coach David Six, opened the 2010-11 season with a statement Friday night, beating defending CAA champion James Madison 69-64 in Harrisonburg, Va. in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT. MEAC Preseason Player of the Year Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) recorded a team-high 27 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Jericka Jenkins added 16 points.

South Dakota State won its first round game against Utah Valley 87-38. Jill Young led seven SDSU players in double figures with 15 points, while Tara Heiser added 14. The Jackrabbits shot 59.3 percent (32-for-54) from the floor, and out-rebounded Utah Valley 42-26. Jennie Sunnarborg pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the win.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Hampton and South Dakota State.

The Jackrabbits (1-0) were picked to finish second in the Summit League this season, picking up four first-place votes to finish behind defending regular-season champion Oral Roberts in the preseason poll. The tournament champion Jackrabbits return senior guard Kristin Rotert, who was named to the Preseason All-Summit League Team. Rotert averaged 12.6 points per game last season.

South Dakota State, ranked No. 15 in the preseason Women's Mid-Major Top 25 poll sponsored by CollegeInsider.com, also return junior forward Jennie Sunnarborg, the team's top returning rebounder at 4.1 boards per contest in 2009-10. Rotert averaged 3.8 rebounds per game last season.

This year's Preseason WNIT features one of the strongest fields in recent memory, with 14 of the 16 teams competing this year coming off postseason play in 2009-10. Seven of those teams – Austin Peay, Hampton, James Madison, Lamar, South Dakota State, St. Francis (Pa.) and Utah Valley – won their conference championships last season. Other teams to compete in the postseason last year in this year's field are Charlotte, DePaul, Florida, Iona, Missouri State, Purdue and Toledo.

The Preseason WNIT features a three-game guarantee format. The event opens Nov. 12-13 with first-round games. Second-round games will be played Nov. 14-15; semifinals will be Nov. 17-18; and the championship is set for Sunday, Nov. 21. Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 19-20. All games are hosted by participating schools, and sites are announced by the end of the preceding round.

Dating back to last season, the Lady Pirates have won 18 of their last 22 games, taking the MEAC Tournament crown in the process last season with a 57-46 win over South Carolina State. At one point during conference play in 2009-10, the Lady Pirates eight straight games. South Dakota State has won six of its last seven games dating back to last season, with its only loss coming in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Oklahoma.

Hampton is 3-1 all-time against teams from the Summit League. The Lady Pirates are 2-0 all-time against Indiana-Purdue (Fort Wayne), 1-0 against North Dakota State and 0-1 against Oral Roberts. This will be the first-ever match-up between Hampton and South Dakota State.
