HAMPTON, Va. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team (7-10, 3-3 MEAC) will look for another home MEAC victory against the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M University (10-6, 3-3 MEAC) at HU Convocation Center on Monday at 6 p.m.
Hampton started fast and won big against the Lady Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman 81-44 at the HU Convocation Center on Saturday. Sophomore
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) had a career-high with 31 points and six assists, and sophomore
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 points and six assists in the win.
The last time the Lady Pirates and Lady Rattlers played, Hampton beat Florida A&M 70-58 in the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament. Florida A&M won the regular-season match-up last season, taking a 68-59 win at Gaither Gymnasium.
Last year, under first-year head coach LeDawn Gibson, the Lady Rattlers finished 14-17 overall and 7-9 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, making a surprising run to the semifinals of the 2009 MEAC Basketball Tournament.
Antonia Bennett, a 6-1 sophomore guard/forward from Lakeland, Fla., is a versatile athlete who will see action at the shooting guard, small forward and power forward positions. She finished last season averaging 9.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. She currently is averaging 11.7 and 5.9 rebounds per contest.
Sophomore sensation Tameka McKelton is a 5-8 guard from Palm Beach, Fla, She is leading the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game. Another sophomore, forward Qiana Donald, is leading the team and second in the MEAC in rebounds, averaging 11.1 per contest.
Florida A&M is averaging 56.8 per game on offense, while its defense gives up 59.8 points a night. The Lady Rattlers are committing 20.3 turnovers a game, while forcing 18.1 turnovers a contest.
