PIRATES FALL AT SOUTH FLORIDA

The Hampton University men's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night, as the Pirates fell 74-55 at the Sun Dome to the Bulls of the University of South Florida.

After holding a 16-point halftime lead, South Florida opened the second half with seven unanswered points before Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) hit a 3-pointer with 16:58 remaining to get the Pirates on the board for the first time in the frame.

Another 11-0 run in the middle of the second half gave the Bulls a game-high 31-point lead when Dominique Jones hit a layup with 12: 07 to play to give South Florida a 60-29 lead.

Charles Funches (Bayonne, N.J.) led the Pirates (2-6) with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) had 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting. Hampton shot 38.8 percent (19-for-49) from the floor in the game, while also going 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from 3-point range and 41.4 percent (12-for-29) from the free throw line.

South Florida shot 45.9 percent (28-for-61) from the floor, and Jarrid Famous led four players in double figures with 16 points. Jones and Chris Howard each added 13 points, while Toarlyn Fitzpatrick scored 11 points.

Famous also led the Bulls with 10 rebounds. South Florida out-rebounded Hampton 43-33, scoring 16 second-chance points behind 14 offensive boards. Hampton forced South Florida into just 10 turnovers, the lowest total for the Pirates defense so far this season.

The Bulls (7-1) opened the game on a 24-6 run to open the game, leading by as much as 18 in the first half when Augustus Gilchrist hit a jumper with 8:28 left in the half to cap the run. South Florida held a 35-19 lead at the half, thanks in large part to a 15-for-28 effort (53.6 percent) from the floor and a 22-12 rebounding advantage.

Hampton went 6-for-24 (25.0 percent) from the floor in the first half, led by Funches with eight points and five rebounds. Famous led the Bulls with seven points in the first half, while Gilchrist, Howard and Fitzpatrick each had six.
