LADY PIRATES COMPETE IN ECSU BEACH OPEN

The Hampton University women’s bowling team competed this past weekend in the Beach Open, hosted by Elizabeth City State University on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Nags Head Bowling Center.

The Lady Pirates went 4-1 in Friday’s total pinfall action, tallying the day’s best mark of 4,497 total pins. Hampton defeated Howard 920-776 to open play, before beating Elizabeth City State 969-911, Saint Peter’s 880-870 and North Carolina Central 886-737. The Lady Pirates closed out total pinfall play by losing 842-859 to Bowie State.

Jazzminn Richey-Obey (Lorain, Ohio) led the Lady Pirates with 988 total pins on Friday, including three games over 200. She bowled a 219 against Bowie State, a 209 against Elizabeth City State and a 204 against North Carolina Central. Jamie Zarnick (West Bloomfield, Mich.), who totaled 950 pins, bowled a personal-best 222 against Howard. Rebecca Glazier (Newport News, Va.) gave the Lady Pirates their third bowled over 900, totaling 907 pins with a team-best total of 223 against Elizabeth City State.

Richey-Obey’s average of 197 pins per game was the third-best of the tournament. Glazier averaged 181 pins per game, which ranked her 11th for the tournament.

Hampton also went 4-1 in Saturday’s baker total pinfall play, falling 674-745 to Saint Peter’s before beating Elizabeth City State 722-655, North Carolina Central 903-608, Bowie State 707-683 and Howard 627-583.

The Lady Pirates compiled 3,633 total pins in baker total pinfall action, the best team mark.

The Lady Pirates closed Sunday’s action by going 1-2 in baker match play, winning three of five matches against North Carolina Central before falling 2-3 to Saint Peter’s and 0-3 to Elizabeth City State.

Sunday’s bracket action saw Saint Peter’s win the team championship, with Bowie State coming in second and Elizabeth City State finishing third.

The Lady Pirates will open MEAC play this weekend, when they host a MEAC North meet Saturday and Sunday at the Sparetimes in Hampton, Va.
