HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team had another strong showing this past weekend, finishing second in the Henry Luce Regatta on Saturday and Sunday at the Marine Science Center.
The Pirates finished with 43 points, behind regatta champion Columbia and its 26 points. Hampton won the A division with 15 points, thanks to the efforts of
Shane Rickie Horsford (Antigua, West Indies) and
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.).
Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Ian Guagliardo (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the Pirates to a third-place finish with 28 points in the B division.
Columbia, which finished second in the A division, won the B division with nine points.
The south winds that were prevalent on Saturday seemed to help the Pirates, while Sunday's winds came from the north. The Pirates recorded their third consecutive top-three finish; after coming in third in the Hampton Bay Days Regatta Oct. 10-11, Hampton won last weekend's Webb Regatta held at Christopher Newport.
The Pirates will return to action this weekend, when they host their third regatta of the season in the Hampton Yacht Club Fall Fling Dinghy Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.
