ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished 10th overall in the Thomas E. Curtis Memorial Regatta hosted by Georgetown University on Saturday and Sunday.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates finished 10th in the team standings, finishing with 224 points overall. Regatta host Georgetown won the team title, finishing with 73 total points. The Hoyas won the A division with 35 points, and St. Mary's College (Md.) won the B division with 36 points. Georgetown had 38 points in the B division to come in second.
Hampton was 10th in the A division with 127 points, and eighth in the B division with 97.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates were among several teams looking to grab the final two qualifying positions for the War Memorial Regatta, Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at St. Mary's College. Hampton had a 16-point lead over Maryland after Saturday's action, giving the Pirates and Lady Pirates a comfortable edge for the MAISA South's qualifying spot.
Maryland pulled ahead on Sunday, thanks in part to a disqualification, and the two teams ended the day tied for what they thought was the finial qualifying spot. George Washington, also in the MAISA South, finished ahead of both Hampton and Maryland, earning the second War Memorial qualifier along with American University.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action Saturday and Sunday, when they will host the annual Hampton Bay Days Regatta. For more information on Hampton University sailing, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
