PRINCESS ANNE, Md. –
Hampton University junior Jahlisa Smith won the 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s cross country individual title at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday morning, helping the Lady Pirates to a fourth-place finish in the 2009 MEAC Championships.

Smith (Plainfield, N.J.) ran an 18:35.70 on the 5K course to take the title. Jasmin Branch (Hampton, Va.) and Kenya Jones also earned All-MEAC honors with top-15 finishes; Branch came in 11th with a 19:24.62, while Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) finished 14th after running a 19:44.18.

“I’m coming off of injuries from the outdoor season, but I was trying to focus on catching the runners slowly and then pass them,” Smith said. “I was trying to make sure our team came out on top.”

Freshman Tyreka Arrington (Lanham, Md.) ran a 20:26.38 to finish 23rd, while Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.) finished 29th with a 21:03.71. Adrienne Thomas (Silver Spring, Md.) finished 39th after running a 21:49.26, and Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ran a 23:02.15 to come in 51st.

Leah Richmond (Long Beach, Calif.) ran a 23:20.92 to finish 55th.

The Lady Pirates finished with 78 points, coming in fourth behind champion Norfolk State. The Pirates finished sixth with 132 points, with Norfolk State winning the men’s team title as well with 33 points. David Kimani (Kenya) led the Pirates with a time of 26:36.10 to come in eighth and pick up All-MEAC honors.

Freshman Berian White (Newark, Del.) completed the 8K course in 27:53.64 to finish 18th, while Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) finished 33rd with a time of 29:58.26. Bradley Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished 36th after running a 30:30.36, and freshman Mike Davenport (Pleasantville, N.J.) came in 37th with a 30:42.96.

Bryan Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md.) ran a 32:20.52 to finish 54th.

The 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships will be held Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky., followed on Nov. 21 by the ECAC/IC4A Cross Country Championships in Bronx, N.Y.
