PIRATES SET TO VISIT WINSTON-SALEM STATE
Coker
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Hampton University football team will return to the road this weekend for Saturday’s game against Winston-Salem State University. Kick-off will be at 2 p.m. at Bowman Gray Stadium.

The Rams come into this year’s contest fresh off their first win of the 2009 season, breaking a six-game losing streak with a 16-10 decision this past Saturday at Bethune-Cookman, while the Pirates lost their second straight, falling this past Saturday 21-9 to South Carolina State in their Homecoming game.

With the loss to South Carolina State, the Pirates dropped to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in MEAC play, while the Rams are just 1-6 on the season.

This will be the 27th meeting all-time between the Pirates and the Rams, with Winston-Salem State holding a 16-9-1 edge. The Rams defeated Hampton 35-30 last season to spoil the Pirates’ Homecoming festivities; it was WSSU’s second straight win over Hampton. The series started in 1953, when Hampton left Winston-Salem, N.C. with a 47-0 win. The Rams picked up their first win in the series in 1955, when they beat visiting Hampton 20-0. From 1970-74, WSSU beat Hampton five straight times; the Pirates have never had a winning streak against the Rams of more than three games (1992, 2000, 2006).

Hampton is 3-8 all-time on the road against Winston-Salem State. The last time Hampton beat WSSU at Bowman Gray Stadium was in 1992, when the Pirates came away with a 27-14 win.
