HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University volleyball team will play a pair of matches at Holland Hall this weekend, welcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes Coppin State and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Lady Pirates will play host to Coppin State at 6 p.m. on Friday, before UMES comes to Holland Hall on Sunday for a 3 p.m. match.

Hampton (7-16, 2-4 MEAC) is on a two-match losing streak, falling this past weekend to Morgan State and Delaware State. Morgan State beat Hampton 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) on Friday at Talmadge Hill Field House, before Delaware State took a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-22) win Sunday afternoon in Holland Hall.

The Lady Pirates are in a tie with Morgan State for fourth in the MEAC Northern Division, though the Lady Bears currently hold the tiebreaker due to Friday’s win. Coppin State (1-25, 0-6 MEAC) sits in last place in the MEAC Northern Division, while UMES (17-6, 6-0 MEAC), boasting reigning MEAC Player of the Week Caylin Woodward and reigning Rookie of the Week Bella Jade Romero, is in first place in the division.

Hampton defeated Coppin State in four sets on Oct. 11, but lost in straight sets at UMES on Oct. 16.

The Lady Pirates are second in the MEAC in opponents’ hitting percentage, only allowing teams a .180 hitting percentage (780 kills, 391 errors, 2,157 attacks) on the season. Hampton is also fourth in the conference in service aces, averaging 1.80 per set as a team for a total of 135 on the season.

Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) leads the Lady Pirates in kills with 185 this season, with junior Brittany Wynne (Sacramento, Calif.) leading the team in kills per set, averaging 2.53 (182 kills overall). Lina Cordoba (Bogota , Columbia) has a .260 hitting percentage (98 kills, 38 errors, 231 attacks) in 66 total sets, while freshman Ornela Cadavid (Cali, Colombia) has a .277 hitting percentage (38 kills, 15 errors, 83 attacks) in just 24 sets played.

Wynne and Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) each lead Hampton with 23 service aces, with both players averaging 0.32 per set. Elkayam also leads the team and sits sixth in the MEAC with 563 assists on the season, an average of 7.71 per set.

Ivana Suput (Zitiste, Serbia) leads the team and is second in the MEAC on defense, averaging 3.84 digs per set. She has 311 digs this season. Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta) is second on the team in digs with 149 – an average of 2.57 per set.

After this weekend’s action, the Lady Pirates will have just three more regular-season matches before the 2009 MEAC Championships in Baltimore, Md. on Nov. 20-22.
