NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team had a strong weekend at Christopher Newport University, winning the team championship in The Webb Regatta Saturday and Sunday.
The Pirates won both the A and B divisions, starting with a strong performance in high winds and large waves on Saturday.
Shane Rickie Horsford (Antigua, West Indies) and
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) sailed in the A division, winning their first races of the regatta, as did
Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Ian Guagliardo (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the B division. After 10 races on Saturday, the B division recorded seven 1st-place finishes, two 2nd-place finishes and one finish of third.
Hampton led both divisions after Saturday’s action, holding a 35-point overall lead.
Though Sunday’s conditions were far calmer, the Pirates continued their dominance, finishing the regatta with a 44-point overall lead over 2nd-place University of Virginia. Maryland finished third, with William & Mary coming in fourth and regatta host CNU finishing fifth.
The top three teams received bags made out of Dan Winter Sails and a trophy.
The Pirates will return to action this weekend, when they will host the Henry Luce Regatta at Strawberry Banks. This will be the team’s second home regatta of the season.
