LADY PIRATES BOWLING STARTS SEASON IN DEEP SOUTH

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –
The Hampton University women's bowling team opened the 2009-2010 season on Saturday and Sunday at the Deep South Open hosted by Winston-Salem State University.

The Lady Pirates went 2-3 in Saturday's 5-person team total pinfall action, winning matches against North Carolina A&T and Elizabeth City State University. Hampton opened play Saturday against Norfolk State, falling 830-746 before beating North Carolina A&T 789-663. The Lady Pirates then fell 777-723 to Arkansas State and 895-737 to Fayetteville State, before beating Elizabeth City State 763-676.

Rebecca Glazier led the Lady Pirates in Saturday's action with a total pinfall of 852, bowling a personal-best 187 against Norfolk State and a 182 in Hampton's win over Elizabeth City State. Jazzminn Richey- Obey (Lorain, Ohio) had a total pinfall of 805 on Saturday, bowling a team-high 206 against North Carolina A&T.

Glazier had the 11th-best pin average after Saturday at 170.4. Richey-Obey's pin average of 161.0 was good enough for a tie for 17th with North Carolina A&T's Amber Brown.

Hampton went 1-4 in Sunday's Baker total pinfall matches, beating North Carolina Central 626-574 after falling 621-590 to Fayetteville State. The Lady Pirates then lost 612-607 to North Carolina A&T, 689-612 to Norfolk State and 607-551 to Elizabeth City State.

Norfolk State won the team championship with 7,705 pins – an average of 1,541. The Lady Pirates finished seventh with a 3-7 record over the two-day competition, compiling 6,744 pins for an average of 1,348.8.

The Lady Pirates will return to action Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when they travel to Kill Devil Hills, N.C. for Scream Night hosted by Elizabeth City State.
