WILLIAMSBURG, Va.-- Whitney Hill led three Lady Pirates in double figures with a team-high 15 points, while fellow teammate Chinyere Ukoh added 14 points as the Hampton University Women’s Basketball team rolled past William & Mary on Friday in Kaplan Arena 72-59.

The victory was Hampton’s second in a row, as the Lady Pirates moves to 2-5 on the season, 1-0 in the MEAC. William & Mary dropped to 5-4 overall.

The teams went to halftime trailing 33-32 when head coach Walter Mebane gave his players the message of intensity. This message worked, as the Lady Pirates came out in the second half with a burst of energy.  William & Mary’s leading scorer, Tiffany Benson, left the game with an injury with 16:20 to play in the second half and Lady Pirates capitalized on that.

The score was tied at 37 points with 16:05 to play, but that was turning point for the Lady Pirates, who went on a 9-0 run to take command of the game and seal the deal.

Friday marked the first time this season the Lady Pirates have scored at least 70 points in a game.

Hill (Hampton, Va.) was 5-for-10 from the floor on the night, while Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va.) pulled down five rebounds to go with her 14 points. Freshman Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 11 points for the Lady Pirates, who shot 46.8 percent from the floor on the night. Ashlee Finley (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) each led the Lady Pirates in rebounds with six apiece.

Kelly Heath led the Tribe in scoring with 12 points on 5-for-13 shooting. William & Mary shot just 36.9 percent from the floor and was outrebounded 42-36.

The Lady Pirates will play another CAA team on Sunday, as they travel to UNC-Wilmington trying to expand their winning streak to three.
